Daniel & Matilda Royce Foss, LeRoy Cemetery, Bradford Co., PA


Daniel and Matilda Royce Foss were my husband’s 3rd great-grandparents. Daniel was born in New Hampshire on 27 July 1790 and served in the War of 1812 with the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. (His service records need further research.) On 13 March 1815, he married Matilda Royce, (born about 1792 in Langdon, Cheshire, NH) daughter of Revolutionary War Veteran, Lemuel Royce, of Cheshire County, NH. The Foss family settled in Cheshire County and began to raise a family. By 1820, two children were born: Lucy born in 1817 and Andrew born in 1819. The 1830 census of Alstead, Cheshire County shows the addition of four more children. They were: Julia Ann (my husband’s 2nd great-grandmother) born in 1822, Lemuel born about 1825, George H.B. born in 1827 and Maria born about 1829. Son, Arvin was born about 1834 and by 1840, the family had migrated to central Pennsylvania, specifically to LeRoy, Bradford County, where the family farmed for a living. Ancestry.com explains this migration trend in an article in Ancestry Magazine, “In the decade or two preceding the American Revolution, several trends within New England set the scene for post-revolution migration patterns. Among these were a rising sense of individualism, a growing population, greater mobility, and increased speculation in land outside the New England area. By the early eighteenth century, the corporate sense of community so carefully fostered by the Puritan founders was giving way to a growing sense of individualism and self-interest. According to historian Richard Bushman, in From Puritan to Yankee, the seeds of this new individualism had been planted in the older, established communities.” You can read the entire article here.
