Lucy Annis Cary Sanderson was my 3rd great-grandmother (Lucy A. Cary –> Lucy A. Sanderson –> Lillian E. Nind –> Robert O. Ballou) , born in May 1808 in Williamsburg, Hampshire County, MA.  It’s so hard to imagine that she lived such a long life back then, with no modern medicines, no conveniences, throughout wars and other hard times.  There must be some truth to the notion that Yankees are from “hardy stock.”

About 1842, the Sandersons headed West to DuPage County, IL.  Lucy’s parents, Abner & Annis Cary, accompanied the family.  Not long after the family arrived and settled, Abner passed away.

In the 1860 US Federal Census records, we find the Sandersons in Iowa and in the next census, 1870, the family settled for good in Carroll County, MO.  Both Lucy and her husband, Luther, died there and were buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
